Why a deadlock matters

Most handle sets on Australian homes have a spring latch: a bevelled tongue that clicks into the frame when the door closes. It holds the door shut, but it was never meant to stop a determined person. A deadlock adds a solid bolt that only moves when it is turned, so it cannot be pushed back from outside.

On older Concord homes we often find front doors with only a knob set, or a deadlock fitted decades ago into a frame that has since dried out and split. Either way, the lock is only as strong as the timber it bolts into.

Choosing the right deadlock

Single cylinder with a thumb turn inside

A key on the outside and a turn knob on the inside. Easy to use and quick to open from inside in an emergency. This suits most front doors in homes where there is no glass panel beside the lock.

Double cylinder

A key on both sides. Useful where a thief could break nearby glass and reach in to turn a thumb turn. The trade-off is that you need a key to get out, so keep one within reach of the door and never leave the door deadlocked while people are inside.

Deadlatch or nightlatch

A lock that deadlocks automatically when the door shuts. Convenient, but it is the most common cause of lockouts, so many people pair it with a keypad lock or keep a spare with a trusted neighbour.

We explain the options on your actual door and recommend one, rather than selling you the most expensive model on the van.

A latch keeps the door shut. A deadlock keeps it locked.

A spring latch can often be slipped with a card. A deadlock bolt has to be turned by a key or a thumb turn, which is why insurers and police crime-prevention advice both point to them.

Installed to hold, not just to look right

A deadlock fails at its weakest point, and that is almost never the lock itself. It is the strike plate screwed into soft jamb trim, or a bolt that only half engages because the door has dropped.

  • We fit strike plates with long screws into the stud behind the frame
  • We check the bolt throws fully and the door closes without being forced
  • We align worn or swollen doors so the lock does not grind every time you use it
  • We remove the old lock neatly and cover old holes where we can

Deadlocks we fit can be keyed to match your other locks on request, and we can fit them as part of a full lock change.

Deadlock repairs

A deadlock that is stiff, only turns with a jiggle, or will not lock at all is a lockout waiting to happen. Causes we see most around Canada Bay and the river suburbs are swollen timber doors after rain, salt air affecting older locks near the water, and doors that have dropped on their hinges.

Many of these are fixed with adjustment, cleaning and lubrication rather than a new lock. If the lock body is worn out, we replace it and tell you why.

Deadlock questions

Is a deadlock required for home insurance?

Some insurers ask about deadlocks on external doors and window locks, and some policies have conditions about them. Check your own policy wording; we can fit what your insurer asks for.

Single or double cylinder: which should I get?

Single cylinder with a thumb turn is easiest and safest to exit in an emergency. Double cylinder suits doors with glass close to the lock. We recommend based on your door.

Can a deadlock be added to a security screen door?

Many security doors already have a triple-lock or deadlock option. We can repair or replace those locks, see our security door service.

My deadlock is stiff. Do I need a new one?

Not always. Stiff deadlocks are often caused by door alignment or dirt in the mechanism, and can be adjusted and serviced.

Can you fit a deadlock the same day I call?

Usually yes, for common door types. We carry standard deadlocks in the van and confirm on the phone.
