Why safes stop opening

Safes fail in fairly predictable ways. Knowing which one has happened helps us choose the least damaging way in.

  • Forgotten combination, often after a safe has sat unused for months
  • Flat batteries in a digital keypad, sometimes with no external power terminal
  • Faulty keypad or solenoid that beeps but will not release the bolt
  • Lost safe key for a key-operated or dual-control safe
  • Jammed bolts, often caused by items inside pressing against the door
  • An inherited safe from a deceased estate with no records at all

Tell us the brand, model and lock type when you call. A photo of the front of the safe, emailed to us, helps a great deal.

How we approach safe opening

We start with the least invasive method that suits the lock. For many digital safes that means checking power, the keypad and any override. For older dial combination locks, it may mean manipulation. Where a safe genuinely cannot be opened any other way, drilling is a last resort, done at a precise point so the safe can be repaired afterwards.

We explain the options and the likely cost before we start, and we never open a safe without being satisfied that you are entitled to its contents.

The whole point of a safe is that it is hard to open.

That stops being funny when it is your passports inside. Safe work takes patience and the right method, and we tell you which method before we start.

Home safes and business safes

At home

Small and medium home safes bolted into wardrobes and floors are common across Concord, Five Dock and Drummoyne. They hold passports, jewellery, documents and spare keys, and they tend to be forgotten until they are urgently needed.

For business

Cafes, shops and offices along Burwood Road, The Boulevarde in Strathfield and Majors Bay Road use safes for cash and documents. Because we keep late hours, we can often attend after close of trade, avoiding disruption during the day. See also our commercial locksmith service.

After the safe is open

Once the safe is open, we can reset the combination, replace a faulty keypad or lock where parts are available, and test it several times with the door open before you close it. If the safe is not worth repairing, we will tell you that too.

  • Change the code from the factory default
  • Record the new code somewhere secure, away from the safe
  • Replace batteries once a year in digital safes

Safe questions

Can you open a safe without drilling?

Often, yes. Many digital and mechanical safes can be opened by non-destructive methods. Drilling is a last resort for safes that cannot be opened any other way.

What information should I have ready?

The brand, model, lock type (dial, keypad or key) and where the safe is fixed. A photo of the front of the safe helps us prepare.

Can you reset my safe code?

Yes. Once the safe is open we can reset the combination or code and test it with the door open.

I inherited a safe with no code. Can you help?

Yes. We open safes from deceased estates once the executor or family confirms they are entitled to the contents.

Do you sell safes?

Our focus is opening, repairing and resetting safes. We are happy to advise on what to look for in a new one.
